Once I read that it's useful to delete all "autosaves", keeping only the first one, and making it Read Only. Don't know why, but it worked for me

Generally, players preventively capture Istanbul from the Ottomans in early game. If you couldn't or didn't want to do so, you can still try taking Istanbul through savegame edit.

What do you mean by "general view"? If you are talking about the army's commander perspective, just select the bodyguard and press Insert. You may have to scroll down to reach the general himself...
