  1. Poll: Re: Has Rome II now finally reached the level of Rome I

I've gotta disagree, since it's actually a vanilla campaign I'm playing of RTW now. The only mod running makes there be one Roman faction instead of 4, so it's not like it's a massive overhaul.
  2. Poll: Re: Has Rome II now finally reached the level of Rome I

I played Rome 2/mods for a while as well, and even playing it recently it was basically me being lured by flash graphics, new game, original and fresh etc. I think it goes to show just how little all...

Re: [Patch 12-β] Siege AI tests and reviews

Does making the torches super weak/gates super strong discourage the AI from just bum-rushing the gate, or even burning it down at all? Does the AI stop and think "hmm, it'd be more worth time and...
  4. Poll: Re: Has Rome II now finally reached the level of Rome I

Well I played Rome 2 vanilla for 20 minutes earlier and I just had to stop. It's still not at the same level for me, it just doesn't keep me playing....and that's without even having encountered the...

Re: [Patch 12-β] Siege AI tests and reviews

That's an interesting concept. It would certainly be more realistic, although I wonder if it would be feasible given that cities can be starved out fairly quickly and it would need for a field army...

Re: [Patch 12-β] Siege AI tests and reviews

I found that time and time again the AI would pull back if and when their siege equipment were destroyed and they no longer had a way into the settlement. The army retreated on the map, intact, and...

    Re: On the euh, ammunition

I find that's just often the nature of TW games, though. Skirmishers typically aren't much use in TW games with fast battles because of the fact that they don't tend to get off many volleys before...
  8. Re: Why can pikemen run in phalanx?! And why cant hoplites run?!

Interesting, and I'd actually forgotten all about the counter weight at the other end so that would certainly change how its held. The one thing I'd say though, in regards to the issue of potentially...

    Re: On the euh, ammunition

What units do carry them? I imagine it's actually common sense that many warriors in antiquity would have had one or two on hand. Cheap and easy to make, relatively easy to use, it doesn't seem at...
  10. Re: Why can pikemen run in phalanx?! And why cant hoplites run?!

The issue I have with this, though, is that if you're using a spear underhand in a hoplite formation (what many of us consider it to be anyways, tightly packed) then surely you'd end up smacking it...
  11. Poll: Re: Has Rome II now finally reached the level of Rome I

The leaders of the Roman Republic need all the practice they can get for governing the state, so this is fine by me. Maybe it'll stop Rome getting stomped so frequently in-game!

    Re: On the euh, ammunition

Roman infantry carried between 2 and 3 javelins.

I imagine a skirmisher could have anything from 2 to 5, depending on how large they were, how he carried them etc

Quivers can fit a lot of...

Re: [patch 12 beta] Siege AI tests and reviews

I actually got a tiny bit optimistic when watching that video. Right up until the whole "they don't reuse siege equipment and still rush gates."

That said, hopefully they'll patch that up too so...

Re: Naval battles + Siege Battles = a total mess

Re: Naval battles + Siege Battles = a total mess

That's not really a solution, though, that's a work-around. And besides, the issue isn't necessarily getting an AI that's as intelligent as a human, it's getting the game's battles to actually work...

Re: Question about patches tw history.

I think they typically take a year, maybe a little more to patch (I'm pretty sure RTW was released in September and 1.5 was released in December the following year)

With that in mind I'm thinking...

Re: Naval battles + Siege Battles = a total mess

Yeah this is a vanilla problem too. Not uncommon for the AI to not manage to even disembark all units properly (some never leave the boats, some have half of their men still in the boats, etc)...

Re: Campaign map way too cramped

No, it wasn't just the sound that was made, it actually unraveled onto the screen. As in the scroll would unroll on-screen. In the context of a scroll that's what unraveling means, and that's what...

Re: Campaign map way too cramped

    1. I never described the information scroll in RTW as an "encyclopedia." I don't think it's ever been called that, and I don't remember hearing about an "encyclopedia" in a TW game until Rome 2.

Re: Campaign map way too cramped

Of course you can. Hell, you could prefer the building icons from Age of Empires 2 to either of the RTW's.

But I'm asking you if you believe that Rome 2's building icons are better than Rome 1's.

Re: Campaign map way too cramped

Completely agree, and this is one of the first things that stuck out to me when I started up a RTW campaign recently. When you look at a city it actually feels like you're looking at an ancient city....

  28. Re: [DEI HtH MP Campaign] Bosporus (LawL) - Arverni (Krunsh)

Re: DeI Roman tactics and formations

    When playing I would use this setup for an army;

    2x Hastati and 2x Allied Hastati (4)
    2x Principes and 2x Allied Principes (8)
    1x Triarii and 1x Allied Triarii/Heavy infantry (10)
    2x Equites...

    Re: Some noob questions

Can't answer #1 but as far as mods go I recommend DeI (Divide et Impera) It's a total overhaul that makes loads of changes to factions, reforms, AI, etc. Can't recommend it highly enough.

    I voted for gameplay because it's a no-brainer.

However graphics are still important too. Chain mail shouldn't look like grey textureless leather, for instance, but the textures, graphics and...
  33. Poll: Re: Has Rome II now finally reached the level of Rome I

  34. Poll: Re: Has Rome II now finally reached the level of Rome I

Feel free to describe some of these bugs, because, as someone currently playing a campaign, I'm finding that there are far less rage-worthy issues with Rome 1 than the sequel.

    I'm not trying to...
  35. Re: [patch 11] Seasons, roads, and attrition.

  36. Re: [Bug] Issue with AI attacking settlement using transports

  37. Re: Why are Rome as a faction so unbelievably terrible?!

Yeah. In reality the army cap system is something new and interesting to use, but it can make things a challenge, especially as Rome vs so many people, and especially if the AI doesn't recognise that...
  38. Re: Why are Rome as a faction so unbelievably terrible?!

Which is what Rome 2 seems to be lacking for many factions.
  39. Re: Why are Rome as a faction so unbelievably terrible?!

Completely this. I don't expect the map and date to reflect the actual ancient world, but I can't for the life of me understand how the total abandonment of history can be tolerated and hand waved...
