It sounds plausible but I imagine if it was it would be common knowledge, especially considering the number of times people have asked how to get 'shield-wall' into RTW..
i saw RS team did it...It is possible im 100% sure

Looks good, sounds like it preforms as a shield wall should also. Aradan did some formations editing for 300' WoS that gives a fair shield wall effect for overarm phalanx troops, but it was just editing formations (and I think it was a bit of a fluke:P).. Can you not engineer the same effect from the RS files?
Just change the secondary (loose) formation spacing to something very small (eg 0.8).
Code:formation 1.2, 1.2, x, y, 3,square
Yes i did it...

It really makes unit stronger a bit....expecially swordsmans against cavalry charges
Yes, but the problem is that the AI does not understand the change, and it will still set its units in the edited "loose" formation when under missile fire, thus making them even easier targets. So, however well it may function for the player, it just handicaps the AI in one more way.
Not that I know of. Someone else might do.
i never see any infantry unit going to loose formation...only archers
Does the appearance of one matter more or do you want the effect? I have long thought about it and one way would just be change the animations. If you go for appearance just change the animations to always have unit walking behind shield and when standing still behind shield, easy enough. I have never felt the need to actually do so but I can see why you would want too...
edit: and make them stand closer together in formation in edu
i wanted to do that for weaker unit....example to roman town guard so they have a little better defense against cavalry attacks....this as i noticed give them and a bit of defence agains infantry units
What you should do then is give them mount effect in the negative against horses. That should work
i can try to do that and see results
