Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
Hi,
I've not seen it reported, but is anyone else having problems getting the Praetorian Prefect ancilliaries?
I ask - and I wrote that changed part of the Mod! That said, after having my own difficulties in my latest play through - I've checked and that section has been changed again - and now does not seem to work, after I tested it to death.:(
Unless anyone points out that it's me that has something awry - I'll see if I can produce a .sav-compatible fix?
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
No one? Everyone else playing the Romans gets all the ancillaries just fine? Including the 2 Praetorian ones?
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
I am actually waiting for 2.7 to be released before i start a Rome campaign.
I did play as the Rome though and i dont remember ever getting those.
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
Been a while since I last played the late Roman campaign, think I stopped my last one about Christmas. I was also frustrated because I couldn't get those traits. Post rebellion, about 750 AUC and had about 120 provinces with all the necessary buildings and had about 15 family members in Rome trying to dish out ancillaries but never got the praetorian prefect one. Also I couldn't recruit early praetorian guards so I though my campaign may have been bugged?
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
There seems to be a bug with early praetorian.
I could recruit them but once i unlocked the late praetorians the early ones disappeared.
The barracks still had them in the description though.
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
My problem was that I couldn't recruit them at all. I had the barracks that had early praetorians in the description but they weren't in the recruitment bar, so I had to build up to the next level to get the late praetorians just so I could have a praetorian unit.
I'm halfway through a Roman campaign at the moment though, only two turns away from the reforms so I'm going to try to see if the same problem is here this time round. Both with the ancillaries and early praetorians.
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
I recruited 2 cohorts of early when i played. The thing is that there was no 1st early cohort.
I am not sure if the mod doesnt have one or its another bug.
Late praetorians were available with cohort and 1st as well.
There is also no description in the barracks about locations of named legions and the legion retinue that generals get.
I play as the Greeks now and i can clearly see in the description of a roman barracks that info but not available when playing as Rome.Another bug?
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
@tedric i have the same problem if i remember right. gonna check it later on. but i don't remember even what other ancilliary's i need to have for the praetorian vexilla... checked it and indeed i don't find any FM or general with the praetorian vexilla
@agrippa.i have the same problem with the early praetorians in my roman campaign.did you have the same problems with some AOR units in northern italy? i only can recruit infantry and javelinmen there,no ligurian noble cav and allied germanic cav units...
same problem in my new bosporian campaign.can't recruit any sling units from lvl2 barracks or mercenary barracks
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
@Tungri, no my AOR units were fine in all areas as far as I'm aware. In my campaign,Northern Italy could recruit allied german cavalry fine along with other local units, it was only the early praetorian guard unitin rome that couldn't be recruited. It'll be another few weeks before I play RS2 again to see if it'll work this time around but I'll comment in this thread again if the problem persists

This is entirely by design - the 'Late' Praetorians replace the 'Early' ones.:thumbsup2

I suspect that this is because you built the Circus Maximus before the Praetorian Training Ground.;) Thus you had the 2nd/Imperial/Augustan Reforms (which remove the 'Early' and enable the 'Late') - 'theoretically' you should have built them the other way around - but your choice.

A unit was needed and I lobbied for at least the 'Early First' to be deleted to make room - the Praetorians never had such a thing. The 'Late First' may go at another time, but lots of people rather like a Praetorian 'Legion' and at least under the Empire they were all together in Roma.
For All - The 'Early Praetorian' unit(s) are meant to represent the initial appearance of such units that became the personal guards of some generals. There should probably be only about 1 per army/stack (which becomes neat if you have a Generic First + 9 Generics + 1xPraetorian)

Right - for anyone that does wish to play a Roman campaign and see those Ancilliaries - here's how:
- Go into the 'Play Roman' campaign folder and then into the Data sub-folder
- Find the 'export_descr_ancillaries' text file and make a copy for backup
- Search for 'Section G1' where you'll see the 'Vexilla Mod' rewrite I did
- Halfway through the list you will see:

So, that's only two tiny changes per Ancillary - change the rank requirement to >=3 (ie Praefectus Alae or above) - and put a ';' (REM statement) in front of the erroneous 'Praefectus Legionis' negative. By reading the detail you'll also see what criteria are needed - but basically an Equestrian with military experience. Once you have them, however, they 'could' be given to anyone.
This change (several turns later) seems to be perfectly stable and is therefore .sav-compatible if you are already playing.:)
[Perhaps one for a sticky under the 'Problems' sticky?]
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
changed it to your new settings and gonna test it out

I probably did this which would have been a mistake on my part, but i can't actually remember now. I'll make sure not to do that this time round.
I'll also enable your fix for the ancillaries. Thanks
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
Bringing this up again like I said I would. @ Tedric, I must have just built the circus maximus first the last time by accident, as I can recruit the early ones fine this time around. As for the Praetorian Prefect ancillary, does the equestrian officer have to be a praefectis legionis? i have an equestrian with military experience in Rome but he didnt get the ancillary. His military related traits are:
4 stars
No influence
Drillmaster
Nightfighter
Equestrian
Understanding of logistics
Command talent
2 Phalerae
Proven battlefield tactician
Tribunis Cohortis
Corona aurea
Hasta Pura
Also the later Praetorian fortress has been built
Re: Praetorian 'Vexilla' Ancilliary problems?
i did apply the fix but still don't have a praetorian vexilla for any equestrian general that have praefectus alae or praefectus legionis??
i did not put ';' anywhere so is that the problem? i an several turns later in the campaign...

Aye, I only changed the equestrian_military_tree number from 4 to 3 also. I forgot the ';' ... I still am only on 75 regions so I haven't reached the 2nd rebellion either

where do i need to put ';' in this?(damn im getting blind,it's right there:) )
isn't it more easy to change this line
and Trait Equestrian_Praefectus_Praetorio = 0
and Trait Equestrian_Praefectus_Legionis = 0
to let's say
and Trait Equestrian_Praefectus_Praetorio = 2
and Trait Equestrian_Praefectus_Legionis = 1
or do you get it to mutch than?

This is the only one that matters - he needs a further promotion to Praefectus Alae (or all the way to Praefectus Legionis)

That is the problem - you need to 'REM' out that line (you could write 'REM' indeed if you wished - iirc - but you'll see the ';' used all over the file) - you must not delete it as the length of EDCT, EDA and similar files must not change))

It needs to be '>=3' and not just changing from 4 to 3. The 2nd Rebellion makes no difference

No, that change wouldn't work. You only get Praefectus Praetorio once you have the ancilliary - and if you already have it, then you won't get it. The latter restricts things back to only the most senior Equestrian Military rank.
All - if you just make the 2 x 2 (so four total) tiny changes and do not delete any lines - then you will be just fine. Change both the criteria and insert just the single ';' each time.:thumbsup2
