I think that there could be a good market for a game called Renaissance Total War. It could cover either the period 1500 to 1600 or else more broadly the period from 1450 to 1650.

It would open in the era of the medieval knight, but with the presence of large clumsy siege guns, and Switzerland and Burgundy would be important countries militarily. After a while, factions should be able to recruit landsknecht type troops, and there should be an emphasis on the use of mercenaries. The later stages of the game should allow for the reforms of Gustavus Adolphus.

Okay, so I decided to make this THREAD to kinda figure out how a Dynasty: Total war might work and what time it should be on. I will keep adding onto this thread as I get more ideas on how this game would work.
[Remeber if you dont like this thread, dont comment on it, thank you]
I was thinking that a Dynasty total war might be from 1500 to maybe 1700.
It would encompass as far south as northern austrailia, as far west as india, as far north as russia, and as far east as....well ocean. I started to think that the main factions could be.
Hideyoshi Japan
Joeson Korea
Ming Dynasty

I was also thinking of adding India and maybe Russia into this mix, but a minimal european involvment would be preferable. Maybe some early colonies or territories owned by the portuguese.
Like I said, I will be editing this thread as time goes on. And add new playable Factions for this era. If you have any ideas, let me know. I have to delve deeper into this time period. Mainley was looking for suggestions for this type of game. Also I ddint know really where I could post this where it would make sense and where I could get alot of suggestions.

Hi guys

Hi guys

Let me introduce myself. My name is James Forrest, and I'm a writer and publisher from Glasgow, Scotland. My team and I are putting the finishing touches to a brand new project - a magazine on gaming, cool TV shows, great movies and retro stuff, comic books, music ... a kind of "rainy day pursuits" magazine, which we're calling Smoke & Mirrors.

The first section will be titled "In Praise Of ..." and I have written a lengthy article for this called In Praise of ... Total War.

I have talked about how I love the games, but I have focussed on them in their released form, because although the article is longish (2800 words or so), I didn't want it to be too ridiculous.

So I left out one crucial item ... the modders. That was deliberate. I want to write a follow up article in Issue 2, and focus it on the outstanding Total War mods and modders. I would like to speak to some of you about your projects. The projects which impress me about all others are these:

Pro Deo Et Reg
Stainless Steel
Darthmod ... any one of them really!
Warhammer Total War (for Kingdoms)
Roma Surrectum II
Third Age Total War
Westeros Total War

Those are all outstanding. I know others have other favourites, and my respect for all modders is enormous, but, for me, these versions have not only made an already wonderful series even better, but in the case of those like Westeros, Third Age and Warhammer, have been wish-fulfillment projects that have elevated the game to an entirely new level. The breakthrough in modding the settlements, which is at its most awesome in Third Age, and looks like being an integral part of the playing experience in Westeros, open up the potential of the Medieval II engine to thrill us for years to come.

I know there is some dubiety over how much freedom the modders will have in Rome II, but the community should be crying out for the same open-source nature of the game as has produced these wonderful works.

The team at Creative Assembly are continuing to push the boundaries of this series, and for me any gamer who has yet to play a Total War title can fiddle with FIFA to their hearts content. They are letting a truly immense experience pass them by. Yet as good as the guys at CA are, it is the modders who keep me coming back for more, time and again. They are the reason I've bought Medieval II three times now ... and Rome twice! (Disks break very easily, don't you find? Or is it just me?)

You guys are geniuses. I want to tell your stories and show off your wonderful work, and let a whole new audience find these games.

Long-run issue: modelling a spherical Earth for global games?

I'm wondering how a global strategic map would work with an (approximately)...

I'm wondering how a global strategic map would work with an (approximately) spherical world.

The traditional approach from global strategy games, like Civilization, was to model the Earth, implicitly, as a cylinder. The poles are effectively absent. Traversing the southern "edge" of the map 360 degrees is just as long as traversing the equator 360 degrees. Other options included a plainly flat world, and an odd toroidal world, where, effectively, you could cross from the northern edge of the map to the southern edge in much the same way that you can cross from the eastern edge to the western edge.

A spherical (or even ellipsoidal) world is possible, but might lead to some (mildly) complicated computational issues, as far as Great circle arcs go (making pathfinding buggier and more complicated than before, when combined with pre-existing factors like mountains and usch). It would also effectively require abandoning any type of traditional "grid" or "hex"-based system in favor of continuous locations, which might make questions like "when do two armies actually encounter each other" more tricky. Adding "skin" to a spherical world is also an issue. One might use a sort of plate carée projection, then project that back onto the sphere, but that would necessarily make more polar latitudes more detailed than more equatorial ones.

One approach I'm partial to, which I think captures (imperfectly but fairly well) most of the features of a spherical world while preserving the possibility of a hex or square grid system is an icosohedral world. It would have twenty triangular flat faces. On each face, the traditional grid systems would work normally. At the intersections of the faces, there would be some mildly challenging issues of how crossings would work, but I would guess nothing insurmountable.

Thoughts?

Hello everyone,

I am currently building a TW 'Building' RDK (Reference...

Hello everyone,

I am currently building a TW 'Building' RDK (Reference Development Kit):
a tool that would help easily and quickly create a sort & filterable reference of buildings for mods or vanilla games;
with various inputs ranging from WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get), to .xml, .txt, etc.
This would allow mod contributors to quickly create a reference for the buildings in-game, based on different inputs (the one the person prefers/ is the least demanding).

However, I only have my own point of view, and I'd wish to have some more feedback from more experienced people concerning features and UI.
At the time of writing, I only need some feedback; but as the project progresses, I will probably need team members.
I'd like to collect some volunteers in this thread.

I will give more info to people who wish to become involved.

So what I would need is:
1. People with a background in webdesign / interface design (no coding, only design)
- For helping to create an optimal UI
2. People with a background in webdevelopment (HTML, CSS, JS, jQuery & jQuery UI)
All enthusiasts who want to test the tool in its early stages/ give feedback about the UI/ early features/ entity names.

If you are even remotely interested in the project, feel free to post an "application".
Support involves mostly giving feedback on visuals atm, but may expand later. .
I will be glad to have your support!

Some rules for feedback partners:
- Please don't leak any details about the project, as all info shall be published on first preview/ release
- I mostly communicate through e-mails, Skype is also welcome.
- Be ready to spend some time to give elaborated feedback.

Thanks in advance for all applications.
