With only months left until the U.S. withdraws from Afghanistan (2014), the war-torn country's security forces seem nowhere near ready to take over their own security — that's the devastating message of "This Is What Winning Looks Like," a new documentary British war correspondent Ben Anderson produced for VICE.

Anderson travelled to Afghanistan in December 2012 and followed U.S. Marines with Afghan security-forces-in-training. In many areas of Afghanistan, international troops have taken up an advisory role ahead of the withdrawal, hoping to teach Afghans how to provide adequate security. Yet the transition proves difficult. Anderson witnessed Afghan police officers locking up prisoners without food or water and claiming fuel money for vehicles that had long since been destroyed. Afghan soldiers open fire on areas where children run around. A police commander is accused of kidnapping young boys, abusing them sexually and even killing them.

"If you would go in and shut down all their corruption schemes, you would render them completely ineffective," Major Bill Steuber, the commanding officer of the police advisory team, says.

Anderson's conclusion is grim:

"All it is now is about getting out and saving face. We're not leaving because we achieved our goals. We're leaving because we've given up on achieving those goals," he says. "All the fighting has been to introduce a hated and feared government, who in some areas make the Taliban look like the good guys."

Is this a current event?

Well, its an ongoing event. The documentary was published this month. But the content in the video is dated Dec 2012. It's been almost 5 months since then; I personally don't think that over this period of time, the situation has improved. Maybe its a little better since then, I cant truthfully say. It does raise the question though, why did it take 5 months to get this published?

Why should this matter?

Well it goes to the original reason why NATO went to Afghanistan: To destroy the Taliban, terrorists, prevent another 9/11, kill Osama bin laden. When NATO leaves in 2014 and Afghanistan is not "fixed", how can we say we have completed our job, we have made the world a better place? What will the people of Afghanistan think of NATO as?; When NATO cannot stop after all these years, the fighting, corruption and radical death. Have all the lives lost to bombs, drone attacks been worth it? Afghanistan really reminds me of Vietnam. The only important difference now is, we still have a chance to change the outcome, to make things better. But that chance just looks impossible.

Watch the first part of "This Is What Winning Looks Like" Documentary in the video below (see spoiler), or visit the VICE website.

Second and Third videos are more interesting imo, as you witness a lot of conversations with Major Bill Steuber, the commanding officer of the police advisory team, who knows a lot about the problems everyone is facing. You don't need to see the videos in order to get the "big picture" of things over there.

You can easily find more text of the documentary in the VICE website. I wont link VICE because its for big boys (and maybe girls? :S)... if you know what I mean (ie: nudity).
When an interviewer asked how Siegfrids thought viewers in countries such as Belaruse and Azerbaijan might react to her performance she said: ”I think that everybody should have the right to do that. It’s no big deal, it’s not big deal to me. It’s a show, and it’s about love and love is beautiful in any form.”
The TRT station claimed that the cancellation of the broadcast was due to low ratings, but last year a quarter of Turkish households tuned in to watch.
All Out has launched a petition urging the President of the European Broadcasting Union to address the issue, and to ensure that Eurovision would “uphold the values of unity and love”, as opposed to censoring Krista’s performance.
In the first hour it was live, the petition gathered over a thousand signatures, it has now received the support of over 8,000 people.
“All Out members are not fooled by Turkey’s weak excuse,” Andre Banks Co-founder and Executive Director of All Out said, “It is clear to the world that Turkey pulled the popular Eurovision show simply because two women expressed love through a kiss. Nothing could be more harmless than a kiss between two people.”
“The Eurovision kiss was not revolutionary. Turkish people already saw a kiss between two women on television. Two women kissed during the 2012 Olympics and that kiss was broadcast on Turkish TV,” Andre Banks said, “The world kept turning and the sun came up the next day. Love should never be feared, it is censorship we should fear.”

I actually find this very disturbing because it really shows how religious conservatism is taking control over Turkey. It's not a surprise that religious conservatives dislike public displays of homosexuality but that they are powerful enough to close down a popular TV show in a secular nation is worrying.

LONDON (MarketWatch) — Which euro-zone country is most deeply in debt? The profligate Greeks, with their generous state-funded pensions? The Cypriots and their banks stuffed with dodgy Russian money? The recession-hit Spaniards or the boom-and-bust Irish?None of the above. Actually, it is the sober, responsible Dutch.
Consumer debt in the Netherlands has hit 250% of available income, one of the highest levels in the world. In Spain, by comparison, it has never gone above 125%.
The Netherlands has turned into one of the most heavily indebted countries in the world. It has slumped into recession and shows very little sign of coming out of it. The euro crisis has been dragging on for three years now but so far has only infected the peripheral nations within the single currency. But the Netherlands is a core member of both the euro and the European Union. If it can’t survive in the euro zone, then the game really will be up.
Holland has always been one of the most prosperous and stable nations with Europe — and one of the most pro-EU. It was a founding member of the union, and it was among the most enthusiastic supporters of the launch of the single currency. With a rich, export-oriented economy, and plenty of successful multinational companies, it had much to gain, one would suppose, from the creation of the single economy that was meant to come into being once the euro was successfully launched.

But instead it has started to play out a depressingly familiar script. It is blowing up in exactly the same way that Ireland, Greece and Portugal did — except on a slightly longer fuse.
Low interest rates, set mainly to benefit the German economy, and lots of cheap capital led to a property boom and an explosion of debt. From the launch of the single currency to the peak of the market, Dutch house prices doubled, making it one of the most overheated markets in the world.
Now that has crashed spectacularly. House prices are falling as fast as they did in Florida when the American housing boom turned sour. Prices are now 16.6% lower than they were at the peak of the bubble in 2008. The National Association of Estate Agents predicts another 7% drop this year. Unless you bought your home back in the last century, it will now be worth less than you paid for it — and even worse, probably less than you borrowed on it as well.
As a result, the Dutch are now sinking under a tide of debt. At more than 250%, household debt is even higher than in Ireland and 2 ½ times the level in Greece. Already one bank was rescued by the government, and with house prices still collapsing there may well be more to come. The Dutch banks have 650 billion euros outstanding on real estate that is rapidly falling in value — and if there is one thing we know for sure about the financial markets it is that when the property markets collapse, the financial system is not far behind.
I've been saying this for a long time now. I've also mentioned several times here (before I gave up on the Mudpit, lets see for how long will I be here this time) how the Netherlands was probably the country taking this neo-liberal approach in Europe to its maximum extreme, what with its newly created tax.heaven and whatnot.

Several empty-headed liberals have accused me, in here, of defending a "totalitarian socialist" (they appear to be very limited when it comes to political theory, confusing Socialism with Social Democracy, which is what I support for my country and for Europe) state, and have said things like "well, it's not the Dutch fault that the Portuguese tax companies to hell, and so they move to Amsterdam", etc. etc. "They're only looking for themselves".

Well that alone could be replied back with a mere "you know, we're in the European Union. The Netherlands signed several treaties on how they should cooperate in good faith with the other member states in several matters, including tax-related ones". But because this forum stenches of europhobia (which, if they were smart, should be more neo-liberalist-o-phobics than europhobics, but to each its own), I actually brought up another argument:

"You know... while the Netherlands is sucking away most million-worth companies from Southern Europe, and even Central Europe, they're running into an abyss, because it's not the Dutch people - or the Dutch state - that is profiting from that... it's a small, select number of Dutch that are profiting from this. Just like elsewhere in Europe".

The result is now here for all us to see. The Netherlands may as well be the last piece of the domino to fall and take the EU - a great project, which was, unfortunately, corrupted by an atrocious ideology, that deserves no more respect than communism does - to its grave.

And, as it turns out, maybe there's more to the EU crisis than siesta-loving Iberians and corrupt Greeks and Italians.

Ok, some people have noticed, but very few.

http://thediplomat.com/flashpoints-b...gh-seas-drama/

The incident occurred last week, as the Philippine coast guards fired on a Taiwanese fishing boat in the Luzon Straits (the water between Taiwan and the main Philippine island of Luzon.) , resulting in the death of the elder ship owner and the disabling of the ship.

It has not been the first time this happened, 2006 saw a similar incident, though that was largely played down, this time it became the focal point of local media and politics, and needless to say, the reaction isn't pretty.

Given that the Luzon strait is only 180 ish nautical miles between the two main islands, but both side claim the standard 200 nautical mile EEZ, it doesn't take a geopolitical expert to see why problems could occur. Taiwan fishing boats have long been the subject of harrasement and often even arrest and attacks from the Philippine coast guards, part of this is due to over fishing on Taiwan's side causing fisherman to try their luck further out, but the Philippine coast guard have also been rather aggressive in their "enforcement" of their territorial claims.

The Philippines at first denied the attack, then admitted a day later, but stating that it was due to the fishing boat attempting to ram the bigger (and obviously armed) coastguard ship which resulted in the shootout.

The situation is unfolding quickly and it's getting pretty ugly, it has been less than a week in, but so far we have already.

1. expelled the Philippine diplomatic representative in Taiwan.

2. recalled our own representative in the Philippines.

3. declared the Philippines a red travel zone (hint, the other countries we have on that list is Iran / Iraq / Afghanistan / Pakistan and African countries in civil war.)

4. suspended working visa applications from the Philippines (they are one of the largest source of export labor in the world and we are one of the largest importer.)

5. shut down pretty much any and all related relationships (such as freeze of scholarship, freeze to all other unrelated negotiations.)

6. sailed an entire battle fleet of naval ship to the the site of the shooting.

7. refused to meet a Philippine special envoy, sending him packing after shutting him out.

Anyone who have any idea of how international diplomacy works should be dropping their jaws here, as this is essentially a war trajectory in high speed. we are already threatening to end all commercial flights and shipping between the 2 sides .

The difference in military capacity on both side is staggering, Taiwan, while not a major military power, certainly punch well about it's weight in relative sense, while the Philippines have virtually no serviceable navy or air force to speak of that can remotely compete with even a half decent military force.

This whole thing have been made most complicated by the fact that the Philippines is clearly trying to play the "Taiwan isn't a country" card here, which has been why the diplomatic negotiation have essentially been torpedoed.

It's getting pretty ugly pretty fast, the government here in Taiwan have been put on the hotseat as local reaction to this incident is fierce, they can not possibly back down unilaterally without major concession on the other end. but there appears to be a pretty massive misjudgement on the Philippines part of this, if it isn't corrected soon, we may be reaching the point of no return soon as we began asking for far less "diplomatic" terms. such as extrication of those coast guards or seriously force the issue on the maritime overlap zones (like, attacking Philippine coastguard ships in that water.)

President Barack Obama has said sexual harassment and assault will not be tolerated in the US military.

His spoke as figures showed reported sexual assaults in the US military rose from 3,192 to 3,374 in 2012.

But as many attacks go unreported, officials estimate the total number of sexual assaults stands at 26,000, up from 19,000 last year.

It comes after the officer tasked with stopping sexual crimes in the US Air Force was charged with sexual battery.

Lt Col Jeff Krusinski, 41, was arrested on Sunday accused of grabbing a woman's breasts and buttocks in a car park in Virginia, police said.

The Air Force has been criticised after a slew of sexual assault cases at its main training centre in Texas.
Well, if President Obama needs to come out and say it then the problem probably is truly serious; but I wonder why there is an increase of sexual crimes in US military last year? I mean there is no significant reorganization so what are other reasons that give such result?

Arguably the most influential man in America, Rush Limbaugh, has invited Obama to negotiate a settlement that will end the stand-off between Obama and Republicans. Obama claims that right-wingers aren't willing to negotiate, now America's anchorman is taking him up on that. Do you think Barack Obama should take Rush up on his offer to negotiate and help solve our nation's problems and end the gridlock? Rush could easily bring congressional Republicans and Obama together and help put the nation first .

Whether you like him or not, Rush is the most influential figure on the right, and quite possibly most influential figure in American politics, period. Should Obama try to negotiate an end to the stand-off?
I really wish American Christians would shut up already and stop complaining about how badly oppressed they are. You are 75% of the American populace, every single president was Christian, most American politicians and businessmen come from your group, you dictate pretty much all the norms of American social life. You are not oppressed and never will be, so stop complaining and give others their rights already.

Members of Greece’s far-right party Golden Dawn party clashed with police in Syntagma Square who prevented them from handing out free food in the iconic central Athens location.

Athens Mayor George Kaminis, banned the food bank, describing it as a “soup kitchen of hatred” because free food would only be given to Greek citizens with identity cards.

After being forced to move on, the anti-immigration party relocated their event to outside their headquarters, and proceeded with their “Greek-only” food handout.

The far-right group, which is also anti-corruption, has seen its popularity rise in recent years and is now the third most popular party in Greece. Golden Dawn won 18 out of 300 parliamentary seats in elections in 2012.

The free food continues to find takers. Unemployment in Greece is at 27 percent and the country is facing further austerity and cuts in order to secure much-needed bailout funds from the European Union and International Monetary Fund.
