EDIT: _*DISCLAIMER:*_ *Armenia is by no means more important than Seleucids*,...

EDIT: DISCLAIMER: Armenia is by no means more important than Seleucids, or Armenian faction, but if they make an east DLC, maybe instead Armenia, Seleucids & Baktria they should do like Sleeucids, Baktria & expand the map to India, with Armenia being out now along with Pontus, dont u think that's better experience? ;)

At first glance Armenia is very simillar to Parthia, jo just another generic faction?

HELL NO ;) :laughter:

Armenia has many archaic characteristics from the ancient Achamenid empire for example gold-clad silk adorned Khuveshavagan elite cavalry, that may look old fashioned, but kicks as hard as cathapracts, and IMHO is the most epic cavalry in our timeframe of Rome 2.

Besides Armenia had cathapracts before Parthia, and it's cathapracts are unique too, Armenia's a montainous land with good and challenging starting position.

See a pic of armenian cathapract before u vote... (note the flag of ancient Armenia):
More information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom...28antiquity%29

Some more reasons why making this surprise for us, dear CA:

Commercial:
- We simply love Armenia
- Armenians are spammed all around the world, an have A BIG MARKET ;)
- Kim Kardashen and her mother are an example of succesfull Amrenians

Gameplay:
- Khuveshavegan
- Cathapracts
- Unique caucasian infantry I'm sure you'll also include for Pontus
- Good starting position on the roof of the world (Ararat mountains)
- Parthia is near, Hellenes are near, it's gonna be tough to survive!
- Colours, banners, silks
- Versatile units
- Ooniqueness

Khuveshavagan cavalry (by Europa Barbarorum team for Rome TW):

Hello everyone.

Hello everyone.

Searching the web for clues about the Phalanx formations in Total War: Rome 2, led me to nothing...
Except that I found out that there is a bit of general confusion regarding the historical facts. I hope this post will help to clarify what is unknown or misunderstood, or just hard to find.

Origins and Evolution

The pure phalangite warfare was effective from 7th century B.C. until the Persian wars (449 B.C.).

The units of the Phalanx of the time were heavy-armoured. The panoply (hoplite's equipment) were composed of: shield, helmet, breastplate, greaves, sword and spear and weighed about 70 pounds (all this on a soldier who himself probably weighed no more than 150 pounds). The hoplite's shield was his defining piece of equipment, even lending its name hoplon to the soldier himself. It was a large and concave, rested on the left shoulder, and stretching down to the soldier's knees. The shield was large enough to protect the right side of the man to each soldier's left, and so formed a wall behind which the hoplite was protected.

The entire panoply was not conceived for individual combat, in fact (despite what we've seen in movies) the unlucky hoplite forced to stand and fight outside of the phalanx would have found himself literally crippled by his own equipment.

The phalanx was organized in 8 or 12 ranks normally, later the Thebans (with Epameinondas) started to use 16 ranks.

During the pure phalangite warfare time interval, the conflicts of the hellenistic world were fought pretty much in the same way. This way was thought to end the conflict as quickly as possible, so the "farmer-soldiers" (with the exception of the professionals spartiate hoplites) could go back to their home and their crops, instead of being stuck in long military campaigns.

The way was simple and brutal: Phalanx against Phalanx, 4 phases.

1- A smooth and flat terrain was chosen by both rivals.
2- The two opposite heavy-armoured phalanx slowly advanced towards each other.
3- A brief and powerful charge and the impact between the two formations.
4- The collapse of one of them and the almost inevitable massacre of the broken fleeing units, by light infantry and cavalry (brought to the battlefield for that role only)

The Peloponnesian War (431-404 B.C.), between Athens and Sparta (and related alliances) changed the static tactical approach of the warfare.

This war was characterised by a strong "asymmetric" component, since its very beginning. Amphibious operations, sieges, raid in enemy territories, guerrilla and counter-guerrilla offensives, forced the "old" heavy hoplites to lighten their equipment, more and more to the point that (about the end of the war) they fought only with the protection of the helmet and the shield.

Macedonian Phalanx

King Philip II of Macedon revolutionised not only the phalanx itself, but its very tactical approach in the battlefield. He kept the 16ranks-depth scheme of the Thebans and the concept of "light armoured hoplite". He replaced the regular eight-feet long spears with the thirteen-to-twentyone-feet long sarissa. The new hoplites, called pezetairoi were lightly-armoured, with a little shield they kept hanged over the left shoulder, so they could handle the long sarissas with both hands. This macedonian formation was less tight than the greek phalanx, every pezetairoi had about 1 square meter space from the others.

Besides the technical improvements, the big difference between the classic greek phalanx and the macedonian was their use in combat. The greek one was slower, heavier but somewhat more offensive. The latter was the true example of what an "anvil" should be in the "hammer and anvil" strategy: almost impenetrable from the front and supported by light infantry and skirmishers, the macedonian phalanx was marvellous in keeping the enemy lines engaged, while the cavalry performed aggressive maneuvers to the flanks and rear of the opposition.

This new phalanx and its application in the battlefield would be later adopted by the son of Philip, Alexander III (the great) becoming the uncontested tactical approach on the battlefield of the "civilized" world.

Until the discipline and the flexibility of the Romans changed everything.. again.

Quick Facts

Early Greek Phalanx

- Very tight formation
- 8-12 Ranks depth
- Heavy-armoured units (hoplon, helmet, breastplate, greaves)
- Very Slow
- Brief and explosive charge to gain momentum for the impact with the enemy
- Eight feet Spears

Late Greek Phalanx

- Very tight formation
- 16 Ranks depth
- Light-armoured units (they used only the hoplon and the helmet for protection)
- Brief and explosive charge to gain momentum for the impact with the enemy
- Eight feet spears

Macedonian Phalanx

- Less tight formation (1 square meter space between soldiers)
- 16 Ranks depth
- Light-armoured units (usually leather corset, lighter bronze helmet, little shield hanged over the left shoulder)
- Used in combination of light troops and skirmishers to hold the line
- Twenty one feet spears (sarissa), held with both hands.

Phalanx Strong Points

- Very tough (at the least) to break from the front
- Depending on the depth, hard to absorb its impact
- Does not require the single soldier to have exceptional capabilities, in comparison of the heroic world in the homeric poems

Phalanx Weaknesses

- Lack in versatility, thus weak against more versatile units and tactics
- Very weak if the formation breaks
- Very weak if charged in the flanks or rear
- Very weak if not supported by light infantry and skirmishers
- Risky, when fighting on uneven, irregular terrain

These are some basic historical facts (part from my books, part from the internet). Enjoy

Hello every one. just saw the Q&A thread and saw that we will have capture points to capture in siege battles for gain victory and dominate the city,But i have an idea that i think it is more cool! How about capturing the city,s most important structures like Palace or Barracks or such important structures or all of em instead of capturing capture points. So the defenders can garrison the structures with their best units and attackers will surround them with their force and kill or capture them or defenders will win and push back the attackers and decrease their moral by killing their frontal units. So two thing would be happen: 1)The attackers can take care of defenders and can dominate the city or capture the remaining resistant forces. 2)The defenders can hold their line and push back the attackers. So they can give up the fight or fight for win. There is no need for capture point with this idea i think. Now what do you think ?!

CA already said that populations return to Total War Rome II after a long time...

CA already said that populations return to Total War Rome II after a long time *Medieval II was the last game that had an actual use of population.*

But i do hope they add the improvements they made during the non-population times to Rome II.

We know that you can send some of your population to your Capital city, that way you unlock buildings and expand your capital's power and influence.

But i also want population to be important in recruitment. That said, i want to have classes among the population you have as well as population based on nationality.

Say i am playing as Sparta, and i want to produce elite spartan units. I will be able to recruit elite spartan units as long as my Spartiate population can support massive recruitment. Once the numbers of Spartiates runs out i will not be able to recruit elite spartan units and will have to depend on the Perikoroi for supplying my armies with units.

Unlike Shogun 2, there is a lot of variety in Rome II and also a lot of these civilizations divided their soldiers by social class.

Another example would be playing as Ptolemaic Egypt. Early on, with a steady number of Greek citizens you can have hellenistic armies, but as battles go on and you lose men you will lose men from that pool. Forcing you to change policies and increase the number of national egyptian units in your armies. Not only it did happen in real life, but it also makes the management of your armies a more important thing.

I hated so much that Shogun 2 limited elite units. If Rome II adds social class division populations as well as populations divided by nationality, you will limit the number of elite troops. But no longer will the limit feel like something that was added to avoid making you OP, but something out of necessity and keeping your social classes balanced.

P.S. Also, playing early Rome you will depend a lot on social classes since you will have to rely on the Polybian legionaries. So adding this feature makes sense.

Source : http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06/...ssinate-people

The Total War series has never struggled to convey its epic subject matter. Accompanying the announcement of each new game in the long-running series are myriad screens and videos that depict hundreds of soldiers cleaving bloody carnage on battlefields throughout history. Clearly, The Creative Assembly has chosen a fitting name for its most prized and famous franchise; one that cuts right to the heart of what the franchise is all about.

Of course, any fool can wield a sharp stick and so, as the series has grown in stature, ambition and complexity, so too has the quieter, more devious side of the war effort. It’s unsurprising, then, that diplomacy and administration are vital facets of Total War: Rome 2 and that the title further broadens the scope for effective empire governance and canny politicking with a host of new micromanagement tools.

Some of these build upon the family, agent and faction elements of 2004’s Rome: Total War, while others are borrowed from more recent entries in the series. However, many are brand new and are aimed at facilitating your choice of graceful diplomacy and spiteful double-dealing both at home and abroad.

Central to improving your effectiveness around the negotiating table is a wealth of new statistical information about rival faction leaders. It’s now possible to tell at a glance how a leader feels about your past decisions and whether they approve of the way you have conducted yourself in your dealings with them, their allies and their enemies. The system is similar to that found in Civilization 5, with each significant action given a plus or minus score that is intended to make it easier to predict the AI’s longer term reactions to your decisions and make transparent the reasons for their own actions.

As you would expect, there have been some significant visual improvements made for Rome 2 and while some are merely cosmetic, others provide tangible gameplay benefits. Buildings in cities and settlements are now identifiable on the campaign map, which makes it easier to assess the bias of the city and the disposition of its leader. This, in turn, helps you to size-up how the metropolis is likely to respond to honeyed words or blunt threats.

While a militaristic society is more likely to resist your polite offer to subjugate it and so require a show of force, a more religious or cultural-focused settlement might accede to your request that it become a vassal or client of your empire. The benefits you reap by making a city a client is a steady income in the form of tributes, which helps to fund your ongoing expansion on other fronts. However, such an arrangement is a two-way street and so you’ll be expected to provide protection to that settlement in times of need.

“Whether you forge alliances with cities, make them your vassals or conquer them by force, it all adds to your overall victory points,” explains Rome 2’s lead campaign designer, Janos Gaspar. “However, sometimes it’s nice to create a ribbon of buffer states at your border that are on friendlier terms with your enemy and so use them as a defensive zone.”

Putting the AI to such use is a smart way to effectively manage your borders, especially as your empire grows and your have multiple fronts to manage, but you shouldn’t expect such devious behaviour to pass unnoticed. Your allies will be keeping a close eye on your politicking elsewhere and will rebel if they feel you have no interest in their long-term wellbeing. If that happens then you might have to quash an uprising by diverting forces that you’d earmarked for more important warmongering in order to deal with former friends.

Further complicating your quest for world domination is the fact that it’s not just your foreign policies that are under scrutiny. If you play as Rome or Carthage you’ll also have to contend with powerful families within your realm who will be quick to judge how well you are guiding your mighty empire. Should your interests run contrary to theirs for too long they will be all too willing to take drastic action, as Gaspar explains.

“If you are a perfect democrat and are able to give the right army commissions to the right families, keep the senate happy and unify families through strategic marriages then you can avoid civil war.

“However, if you accumulate too much power or influence then Rome becomes distrustful and starts to view you as a would-be tyrant. Taken to an extreme the other powerful families might want to dispose of you. Likewise, if you make bad decisions and are you’re no longer powerful enough to lead Rome they might ask ‘could you die please?’”

Choosing how to deal with possible attempts on your life, keep the senate happy and quash potential rebellions will require cunning, guile and a keen mind. Evidently, if you’re to triumph in the arena of total war, you’ll need to do more than just stab men with pointy sticks.

Is anyone else just a little unnerved by the huge nile river in the game?...

Is anyone else just a little unnerved by the huge nile river in the game? Literally it's as wide on the map as the red sea, look if you haven't already seen it:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Does this strike a nerve with anybody else? I mean I guess I understand it's so ships can move down the nile (which is... weird), but do we really have to exaggerate its geography that much? Does it even need to be that wide for naval ships? I just think I liked previous Euro maps from Total War better, where the nile delta was better represented as a division into multiple smaller rivers, rather than one giant river down the middle with a few little ones.

I don't think it really classifies as a river anymore when it's that gaping.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Before you jump me with "why the **** are you whining about this whiner god it's so small ugh **** my hemorrhoids are acting up again because you whined", just know this is a singular issue I was bringing up and asking the general population about. I don't think this is a game breaker. Did you read that? Do it again. I do not think the entire game is ruined because the nile delta isn't realistic.

Apologies if this question has already been answered somewhere else:

There...

Apologies if this question has already been answered somewhere else:

There have been several reports that Total War: Rome II will contain 183 regions:

http://www.vg247.com/2013/04/02/total-war-rome-2-will-have-500-units-117-factions-and-183-regions/

When counting the number of regions on the campaign map, I only get 173 regions:

21: Africa

63: “Asia”

09: Levant (Nabataea-4,Syria-4, Cyprus)
06: Arabia (Arabia Magna-3, Arabia Felix-3)
07: Mesopotamia and Armenia
13: Anatolia
21: Iran (Media Magna-3, Persis-3, Parthia-4, Carmania-2, Gedrosia-2, Aria-3, Bactria-2, Arachosa-2)
07: Scythia, Chorasmia, Transoxania

89: “Europe”

11: Iberian Peninsula (Baetica-2, Lusitania-2, Tarraconensis-3, Cartaginensis-4)
12: Gaul (Provinica-3, Aquitania-2, Celtica-3, Belgica-2, Germania Minor-2)
06: British Isles
10: Italian Peninsula (Magna Graecia-4, Italia-4, Corsica et Sardinia-2)
11: Germania (Magna Germania-3, Suebia-4, Silesia-2, Hercynia-2)
09: Cisalpina, Raetia et Noricum, Pannonia
14: South-eastern Europe (incl. Crete, Rhodes)
16: Sarmatia, Dacia, Ponto-Caspia, Bosporus, Caucasus
