Quest for Glory 4.5

This is Quest For Glory 4.5. It is an parody from the original game series...

This is Quest For Glory 4.5. It is an parody from the original game series Quest for Glory. They made several games in the series but stop in the late 1990's due to budget cuts. This series was a very popular advantage game series.

You are able to pick from 3 classes, Fighter, Magic user, and Thief. Each one had it's own strengths and weaknesses. You'll start out the game meeting the new Baron of the town. He is very rude to you and him and his cronies leave you. You go into town and there are an crowd of people there blaming you for their problems and you quickly leave. After that, you are free to explore the town, kill monsters and start working on the game's quests.

If you are familiar with the series it is a blast from the past with many old characters from game 1 and a few from the latter games in the series. This game is suppose to be a up to date version of QFG1 which was released in the 1980's. You can go visit some of the old characters, see that few have died, from old age or from not so nice causes, and break into a few new buildings if you are a thief class. You can do outrageous things to, like go to the Starbucks, Go to an decayed church or go to an Brothel and have "play time" which I can not show the picture here .

This does get old early on, especially if you know some of the characters already, so you have to keep playing and fast to keep interested, otherwise you will get bored very fast. There is a few dead ends that there was never in the old games so you have to keep out for that. You must also watch for the bugs in this game. Although it is "4.5", it is a fan base game, so like I said, expect the bugs. And there is a "sex scene" in here, so be careful if you got kids around.

All in all, the game is fun. Think of Leisure Suit Larry in terms of some of the adult humor in this game. At the ending of the day you find everyone you're suppose to find like Elsa and get to free some of the people from jail and so on. While it is hard to run on some computers, it is possible to do so. So I hope you all enjoyed my short review on this game. If you not offended by some of the humor, I encourage all of you to get it. It's tough writing it on a parody of classic series.

Story:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Game begins with a flashforward where Kirk and Spock are fighting the Gorn. It then goes back to a few hours ago where the Enterprise is investigating a distresss signal from the Helios One station around a Binary Star. After rescuing the captain of the station, Kirk and Spock go down to "New Vulcan" in order to determine the cause of the power failure. There the Gorn take a device called "Helios One" which has the capability to open wormholes to their galaxy, and they intend to use it for surprise attacks on Federation worlds. Kirk and Spock report it to Starfleet, and then go to chase the Gorn to their Galaxy to retrieve or destroy the device, while simultaneously resucing Saarik, a Vulcan Scientist. They manage to do so and return to federation space.

Gameplay:

Pros:

The Gorn's AI feels pretty good, although rather dumb. Harder enemies are harder to kill, but the majority of their AI is hiding behind cover and shooting. Kirk has shields and health (the former regenerate, the latter doesn't without a med station) but you spend a lot of your combat behind cover as well. Overall, the fighting seems like Red Faction Guerrila's combat, but without the sandbox or the destruction. If I had to compare them, the Gorn would be like the Trandoshans in Republic Commando.

The game is actually rather interactive, you have objectives like earning commendations, making your own cover to avoid solar wind, and finding tricorder logs and other information on the story. The tricorder itself proves useful to all of these.

There is also a variety of weapons you get to use throughout the game, and they are upgraded according to what you can buy with experience points.

The Music is pretty good, using the scores taken from the 2009 and 2013 Star Trek movies and other tracks composed by Michael Giaccino. The use of Violin and Horns for action sequences is much better than the use of percussion instruments like in Halo. It was done with a real orchestra as well, unlike most games which synthesize their music.

Cons:

The game, overall, seems like it was rushed to be released prior to Into Darkness. The graphics could have been a lot better, and so could the story. It feels like they interrupt the actual gameplay to often, where fighting with the enterprise is constantly interrupted by cutscenes. Furthermore, it progresses rather slowly at times, and feels very straightforward, like Call of Duty.

The game is made a first-person shooter, when it would have done better as a sandbox RPG. They tried to make it interactive like Star-Trek Online in a FPS setting.

The Graphics need work, animation is only adequate, and detail isn't comparable to anything more than Halo 3 or TES IV: Oblivion era stuff. Explosion and weapons animations are nice though, however the animations for talking and facial expressions are horrid.

They didn't add a multiplayer to this, when they probably easily could have. The variety of weapons (Federation and Gorn) and the use of shields and medpacks would have made for a good go-between multiplayer, similar to Halo: CE and Star Wars: Republic Commando's multiplayer styles; not to mention they may have been able to make a space battle system between players. There are also a variety of different places to use as maps: New Vulcan and the Federation Spacedock for example.

There is some minor DLC planned, but nothing worth spending on probably.

Overall: 6/10

Story: 6/10 - A rather cliche, typical, Star Trek plot. No interesting plot twists or anything.

Graphics: 4/10 - Low quality graphics and animation, they could have spent more time on this part of the game and released it in the summer. Explosion and weapons animations are nice though.

Gameplay: 6/10 - They could have done a lot more with this section, especially in terms of the cutscenes. Long cutscenes and long action sequences like in a more conventional FPS. They should have also spent the time to add multiplayer. The Music for the game does add a good quality, but doesn't exactly enhance the feel of the game.
