An AAR about a Templar Sergeant in the crusades, as he follows King Baldwin where God's work needs doing. On E/E setting :( with no mods. This is my third AAR, hopefully my second successful one (the last one was discontinued due to trouble with Steam). Enjoy. Pictures will be added to the first part when I've got more time.
The man in front of me fell on top of me and I stepped back. He slid to the ground and was suddenly replaced by a vicious looking archer. I tried to move away, but there was nowhere to go, only more men periodically pushed closer together by another Knight, riding through the mass of men towards then enemy. Towards the enemy: it was the only way. So I picked up my shield, tried to look dangerous, and lunged. I felt the spearhead slide between a pair of ribs, saw the look of shock in his face as a man who, seconds before, had been franticly looking for escape killed him. Seconds? Surely it could not be, for I would be dead if it were seconds. Everything seemed to be slower than before. Me included. It was odd, but this must be what the veterans talked about around the campfires. The place where seconds were replaced by heartbeats, minutes by seconds.
My thoughts were interrupted as an infantryman pushed the corpse – my spear still in it – aside. Lacking a weapon, I slid my arm from the shield straps and grabbed the narrow end in both hands, beating down on my opponent with the heavy wood. The man was temporarily stunned, and in that split second, I tried to pull my spear from the archer (still groaning on the ground), found it was jammed, and grabbed the spear from the man who had stood front of me. My chain mail held against a stinging blow to my chest and I swung the spear as my opponent did the sword, leaving a neat red line across the man’s throat, the neatness instantly ruined by a spray of blood. The man was dead and, in the suddenly silent streets I looked up at the moon. We had won. I was Roger Malter. I was a soldier. I was a Templar. I was alive.

Noob to this mod so I have a few questions:

How/where do I install the 3.5 and 3.5.1 patches? I've already buggered 1 install - read the install thread/s but dont quite get it. Sorry if i'm being dense. (yes I know I am ). Got 3.4 working ok, what do I do then?

I can only get a maximum of 1280 x 960 resolution. Is this the max? Seems rather low given I can get higher on recent games.

Hoping for a quick reply....

okay. I just uninstalled medieval 2, so that I can try a new mod (third age)

However... something has happened. I reinstalled and the mod didn't work properly. I decided to check, and kingdoms isn't even loading anymore.

I have at this point reinstalled 3 times, and I get the same error each time.

I use Windows XP professional, if that helps.

Upon loading a mod (stainless steel/third age) It will go to the main screen, but crash with an "unknown error" upon a second or so into loading a custom battle/new campaign.

Upon using the launcher-- same thing.

Kingdoms.exe-- I get a second or two of loading of the MEDIEVAL 2 TOTAL WAR screen (the one with the knights charging out at you) and then I get a wierd error, I can't read what it says, but it's a tiny box. Then I have to click "ok" and it dies.

I was just playing yesterday, when I wanted to try the new mod, mods and kingdoms both worked fine!!

I install the game, then kingdoms (I have gold, the one with disk 1 medieval 2, disk 2 kingdoms) and isntall one campaign (teutonic) and directx. I restart, then install the 1.05 patch (necessary for the mod)

Then I test it, and it breaks each time.

Finally, medieval 2 works fine-- only kingdoms is bad.

My next step will be to redownload the patch, it's ancient, so maybe that's it.

This is frustrating as blazes!

Hey everyone this problem has probably been asked plently of times before, however....
I've recently started editing my EDU file to change the statistics of many of my units. I noticed that the changes I made were not taking effect, so I started looking on the forums here for an answer. I found that I need to add [io]file_first=true to the preference file. I did that and changed the file to read only as I was supposed to. However I still havent seen my changes take effect in game. Does anyone have any advice or idea where I can possibly go from here.

November 20, 2009 - Law firm Abington IP has begun asking those affected by the recent bannings of modified Xbox 360 consoles to register as participants in a potential class action lawsuit against Microsoft.

Abington IP takes issue with the timing of the bans, rather than the act itself. The firm states Microsoft knowingly banned modified consoles near the release dates of some of its biggest titles to help combat pirated copies.

"This 'convenient' timing may have resulted in more Xbox Live subscription revenues for Microsoft than it would have generated had these Xbox console bans taken place at some time before the release of Halo 3: ODST and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," the statement on the firm's reads.

"Additionally, sales of both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3: ODST would likely have been greatly diminished had the Xbox console ban occurred prior to the release of these games."

When asked for comment, Microsoft says the company is within its legal rights to ban those playing with modified Xbox 360 consoles.

"Piracy is illegal and modifying an Xbox 360 is a violation of the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use, a spokesperson told IGN. "Microsoft is well within its legal rights to ban these users from Xbox LIVE."

Sketchy reports from earlier this month suggested the amount of total users banned had reached upwards of one million, but Microsoft has denied the number was that high. "We didn't release the number. I cannot explain to you why people would think it was a million people. It wasn't a million people," said Marc Whitten, general manager of Xbox Live in an interview with Venture Beat.

Death certificate is imprinted on the Shroud of Turin, says Vatican scholar

A Vatican scholar claims to have deciphered the "death certificate" imprinted on the Shroud of Turin, or Holy Shroud, a linen cloth revered by Christians and held by many to bear the image of the crucified Jesus.
Dr Barbara Frale, a researcher in the Vatican secret archives, said "I think I have managed to read the burial certificate of Jesus the Nazarene, or Jesus of Nazareth." She said that she had reconstructed it from fragments of Greek, Hebrew and Latin writing imprinted on the cloth together with the image of the crucified man.
The shroud, which is kept in the royal chapel of Turin Cathedral and is to be put in display next Spring, is regarded by many scholars as a medieval forgery. A 1988 carbon dating of a fragment of the cloth dated it to the Middle Ages.
However Dr Frale, who is to publish her findings in a new book, La Sindone di Gesu Nazareno (The Shroud of Jesus of Nazareth) said that the inscription provided "historical date consistent with the Gospels account". The letters, barely visible to the naked eye, were first spotted during an examination of the shroud in 1978, and others have since come to light.

Some scholars have suggested that the writing is from a reliquary attached to the cloth in medieval times. But Dr Frale said that the text could not have been written by a medieval Christian because it did not refer to Jesus as Christ but as "the Nazarene". This would have been "heretical" in the Middle Ages since it defined Jesus as "only a man" rather than the Son of God.
Like the image of the man himself the letters are in reverse and only make sense in negative photographs. Dr Frale told La Repubblica that under Jewish burial practices current at the time of Christ in a Roman colony such as Palestine, a body buried after a death sentence could only be returned to the family after a year in a common grave.
A death certificate was therefore glued to the burial shroud to identify it for later retrieval, and was usually stuck to the cloth around the face. This had apparently been done in the case of Jesus even though he was buried not in a common grave but in the tomb offered by Joseph of Arimathea.
Dr Frale said that many of the letters were missing, with Jesus for example referred to as "(I)esou(s) Nnazarennos" and only the "iber" of "Tiberiou" surviving. Her reconstruction, however, suggested that the certificate read: "In the year 16 of the reign of the Emperor Tiberius Jesus the Nazarene, taken down in the early evening after having been condemned to death by a Roman judge because he was found guilty by a Hebrew authority, is hereby sent for burial with the obligation of being consigned to his family only after one full year". It ends "signed by" but the signature has not survived.
Dr Frale said that the use of three languages was consistent with the polyglot nature of a community of Greek-speaking Jews in a Roman colony. Best known for her studies of the Knights Templar, who she claims at one stage preserved the shroud, she said what she had deciphered was "the death sentence on a man called Jesus the Nazarene. If that man was also Christ the Son of God it is beyond my job to establish. I did not set out to demonstrate the truth of faith. I am a Catholic, but all my teachers have been atheists or agnostics, and the only believer among them was a Jew. I forced myself to work on this as I would have done on any other archaeological find."
The Catholic Church has never either endorsed the Turin Shroud or rejected it as inauthentic. Pope John Paul II arranged for public showings in 1998 and 2000, saying: "The Shroud is an image of God's love as well as of human sin. The imprint left by the tortured body of the Crucified One, which attests to the tremendous human capacity for causing pain and death to one's fellow man, stands as an icon of the suffering of the innocent in every age." Pope Benedict XVI is to pray before the Shroud when it is put on show again next Spring in Turin.
The fossilized jaw bone of a pliosaur is featured in the above photo.

British authorities say the fossilized skull of a giant sea monster has been found off England's southern coast.
The fossil came from a pliosaur, a ferocious predator that lived in the oceans 150 million years ago.
The skull was discovered in Dorset by a collector and measures 2.4 meters (8 feet) in length. The discovery was announced Tuesday.
Scientists believe the creature would have been about 16 meters (52 feet) long.
David Martill, a paleontologist from the University of Portsmouth, says pliosaurs had short necks and huge, crocodile-like heads with powerful jaws and a set of razor-sharp teeth.
He said they used paddle-like limbs to propel their bodies through the water and were generally carnivores.
The skull will be put on display in a Dorset museum.
