RomeSAGE
========

RomeSAGE is a Saved Game Editor for Rome: Total War.

It allows you to change some of the options in saved game files once you have started playing the game. For example, if you are well into a campaign and found it too easy, or too hard, with RomeSAGE you can change the campaign or battle difficulty in your saved game file.

RomeSAGE currently supports the following options:

o Campaign difficulty
o Battle difficulty
o Battle time limit on or off (as per MarkP's great TiLiN tool).
o Short or long campaign
o Changing the unit scale (also known as unit size).
o Changing year and season. This does not undo any other changes that may have occurred in the game.

Some of these options can be changed within RTW itself, but others, like the difficulties, cannot be altered in RTW once you have started a campaign, so for this you need RomeSAGE.

I have successfully tested Battle difficulty, Battle time limit and Unit scale. Although the other two options load OK, I'm not sure if they are having the right affect, so would appreciate any feed back.

Unit scale is normally set through the RTW Video options, and then applies to any new games. When you change the option in RTW it does not affect any existing save games, which is where RomeSAGE comes in. With RomeSAGE you can change the unit scale for existing games, and this will affect any new units that are recruited (but not existing units).

For example, for Hastati the unit sizes are:

o Small 20
o Normal 40
o Large 80
o Huge 160

I hope you find RomeSAGE easy to use. Use the Browse button to load an existing RTW saved game file (in the "Rome - Total War\saves" directory). The current settings for the options will be displayed by RomeSAGE. Use the "Set" check boxes to choose which options you want to change, and then change the option and hit Apply. RomeSAGE NEVER alters existing saved game files - it copies the existing file to a new one and applies the changes to the new file. The new file will be called RomeSageNNN.sav, where NNN is the first free slot between 000 and 999. Simply load the RomeSageNNN.sav file in RTW.

RomeSAGE does not include options which can be changed from within RTW itself. To be able to include other options, I need two saved game files, one with the option switched on, and one with it switched off. Even then it may not be possible to do.

Spoiler for Change history

19th December 2005 version 1.6.0.0
- Added support for RTW Barbarian Invasion 1.6 and RTW 1.5.

8th October 2005 version 1.0.1.1
- Fixes to version 1.0.1.0 - caused CTDs in BI.
- Note also works RTW 1.3.

6th October 2005 version 1.0.1.0
- Added support for RTW Barbarian Invasion 1.4 and RTW 1.3.
- RomeSAGE still seems to be the only way to change difficulty mid campaign.

22rd March 2005 version 1.0.0.9
- Added support for Rome Total Realism version 5.4.
- Uses RTR factions and difficulty levels.
- The Battle Timer can also be disabled, despite not being available when playing RTR.

13th February 2005 version 1.0.0.8
- Added support for setting the unit scale in increments of 5, e.g., 135.
- The unit scale must be between 20 and 160, as RTW does not support other values.
- Changing the unit scale will only affect new units, and not existing units (unless they are retrained).

5th February 2005 version 1.0.0.7
- Added support for Rome Total War patch 1.2. This version of RomeSage works with all (unmodded) versions of Rome Total War; it may also work with some mods, but I make no guarantees.

21th October 2004 version 1.0.0.6
- Added support for changing year and season.

20th October 2004 version 1.0.0.5
- Fixed other options (difficulty etc) not working for Total Realism (and other) mods.

10th October 2004 version 1.0.0.4
- Fixed battle time limit not working for some games (perhaps if using first patch, or Rome Total Realism mod).

10th October 2004 version 1.0.0.3
- Fixed not reporting correct campaign difficulty for non-Julii factions.

10th October 2004 version 1.0.0.2
- Added support for changing unit scale (also size as unit size).

8th October 2004 version 1.0.0.1
- First version.

Hi. I like to play sucession/swap campaigns. I use it to check the difficulty settings of a save game Ive just downloaded and about to play. An easy to use small tool. Thank you.

I am trying this while using Europa Barbarorum. The game doesn't crash, so it would apparently work, but the radar map has abruptly changed. Why is that? What's happened?

I don't like it. Can anyone make a save-game editor where you can actually change stuff, like add buildings to cities and units to armies? I'd really appriciate it.

RomeSage crashes every time I load a savegame into it or make changes to a loaded savegame. Thanks anyway.

Hi. Nice little editor. Nevertheless it did it job, after great battle won against Julii crushed before save, and repeated series were not any near the result.
I have even dreamed about editing men in currently existing units counts to "repeat" the battle outcome as close, as I could. But no editor was found for the original Rome: Total War which could do such a trick.
RomeSage allowed to lower the difficulty for this single battle, and to break the misfortunate serie, then raise the difficulty back.

One con though: after raising the difficulty back, I found an unusual battle behaviour some time later - Germanic faction armies sturdiness in melee became impossibly great. An overpowering army kills several germans (though it kills) before being wiped out. Ranged weapons remained effective. Even routing troops rallied by dogs, mounted troops or whatever - either flee almost unharmed, or eventually get surrounded and start a feast at your "winning" unit (while you are obviously not watching this way). It is so for all units in this faction command - be it barbarian mercenaries, screeching women, axemen, warbands or bodyguard, so it doesn't seem to be in unit abilities. It is not so for Julii or S.P.Q.R. No other information yet about ingame behaviour.

Upd: hex editor shows 3 modified bytes in savegame file after lowering difficulty to Easy, and 4 modified bytes after raising it back. Manual change of the byte at 0xE2A offset back to original seemed to fix the above behaviour (RomeTW 1.5).

If you're having any issues with RomeSage please check this tool
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/downl...o=file&id=4412
it does the same but is updated and works with mods/expansions.
