NOTE!!!

I have updated this download to include a new version of the spartan and leonidas. This zip now includes the old version and new version of both.

The new version has an improved cloak, a sword model as a secondary weapon, a loin cloth instead of a skirt and the leonidas model has now got the necklace from the movie.

Here are some pictures of the new versions.

Question answered - I guess we'll have to wait until TW2 allows us to mod units.

TUTORIAL - adding to bi
(if you want to add to RTW do the same stuff, but in the RTW/data folder)

1) Go to the bi/data folder
2) Add the models ss2.cas and ss3.cas to the models_unit folder
3) Add the textures 300spartan and 300leonidas.tga to the models_unit/texture folder
(if a texture folder doesn't exist then create one.)
4) Take copies of the following files in the bi/data folder, export_descr_units, descr_model_battle, export_descr_buildings

5) Open the descr_model battle file and add the following entry at the bottom:-

type dor_spar
;--------------------------------------
skeleton fs_slow_spearman
indiv_range 40
texture berbers, bi/data/models_unit/textures/300spartan
model_flexi bi/data/models_unit/ss3.cas, 15
model_flexi bi/data/models_unit/ss3.cas, 30
model_flexi bi/data/models_unit/ss3.cas, max
model_tri 400, 0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f

6) Then add the following entry:-

type 300_officer
;--------------------------------------
skeleton fs_dagger
skeleton_horse fs_hc_swordsman
skeleton_elephant fs_forest_elephant_rider
skeleton_chariot fs_chariot_sword
skeleton_camel fs_hc_swordsman
skeleton_scorpion_cart fs_carriage_ballistae_crew
indiv_range 40
texture berbers, bi/data/models_unit/textures/300leonidas.tga
model_flexi bi/data/models_unit/ss2.cas, 15
model_flexi bi/data/models_unit/ss2.cas, 30
model_flexi bi/data/models_unit/ss2.cas, 40
model_flexi bi/data/models_unit/ss2.cas, max
model_tri 400, 0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f

7) close and save descr_model_battle and now open export_descr_units

8) Add the following entry:-

type dor spar
dictionary dor_spar
category infantry
class heavy
voice_type Medium_1
soldier dor_spar, 45, 0, 0.35
officer 300_officer
attributes sea_faring, hide_forest
formation 1, 1, 1.2, 1.2, 8, square, shield_wall
stat_health 1, 0
stat_pri 39, 4, no, 0, 0, melee, blade, piercing, spear, 0 ,0.1
stat_pri_attr spear, spear_bonus_8
stat_sec 0, 0, no, 0, 0, no, no, no, none, 25 ,1
stat_sec_attr no
stat_pri_armour 20, 14, 16, metal
stat_sec_armour 0, 0, flesh
stat_heat 2
stat_ground 0, 1, -1, -1
stat_mental 19, normal, highly_trained
stat_charge_dist 30
stat_fire_delay 0
stat_food 60, 300
stat_cost 4, 1700, 400, 70, 100, 1500
ownership berbers

9) save and close this file, the unit has now been added to the game

10) If you want to add a description then go to the file bi/data/text/export_units and add the following entry:-

Ž----------------

{dor_spar} Spartiates

{dor_spar_descr}
A glimpse of things to come...

{dor_spar_descr_short}
A glimpse of things to come...

Ž----------------

11) save and close this file.
12) If you want to make this unit avaialable in a campaign then open the export_descr_buildings file located in the bi/data folder.
13) Find whatever building or series of buildings you want to add the unit to and then isert the following line of text:-

recruit "dor spar" 1 requires factions { berbers, }

14) Save and close this file.
15) If you want to add unit cards then go to the folder bi/data/ui/unit_info/berbers and add the file dor_spar_info
16) Then go to the folder bi/data/ui/units/berbers and add the file #dor_spar

This method has been tried and tested, just like the units and both work. If you have a problem then YOU are doing something wrong.

P.S. If you want to add them to a different faction then just change the faction name in every instance in which it appears in this tutorial. Also, if you want to replace an existing unit then add the texture and model lines above replacing those of the existing unit.

Dude, i did everything you said STEP BY STEP, and it doesn't work.

I wanted to replace the existing Spartans with your models and textures. I put the necessary files in the folder, edited the model/texture lines to the right path and file: nothing.

It simply crashes back to desktop upon loading a battle. I mean, how difficult is it to replace the lines of an existing unit? It's not, it's very easy and there's really nothing i did wrong. It just doesn't work.

I have a better idea.

1. Get a clean descr_model_battle.txt file.
2. Edit it so that the existing Spartan models/textures get replaced.
3. If it works for you, upload the txt file.

Problem solved.

Well if you had completed the tutorial prooperly (for BI as it states) then there would be no problem.

I made the unit and texture which i tested. Both work in RTW & BI. As far as I'm concerned I shouldn't be expected to reproduce a tutorial which can already be found in the tutorials section to help people add the unit to the game. Its not my problem if people don't know how to add units and are too lazy to look up a tutorial.

I don't see why people have been having a problem, the unit works!

-Tutorial-
Replacing the spartan unit in RTW v1.5

Replace the code for spartan hoplites in your descr_model_battle and export_descr_units repectfully as follows.

type greek_hoplite_spartan_pylos
skeleton fs_slow_spearman
indiv_range 40
texture greek_cities, data/models_unit/textures/300spartan
model_flexi data/models_unit/ss3.cas, 8
model_flexi data/models_unit/ss3.cas, 15
model_flexi data/models_unit/ss3.cas, 30
model_flexi data/models_unit/ss3.cas, max
model_tri 400, 0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f

type greek hoplite spartan
dictionary greek_hoplite_spartan ; Spartan Hoplites
category infantry
class spearmen
voice_type Medium_1
soldier greek_hoplite_spartan_pylos, 40, 0, 1.3
officer spartan_officer
attributes sea_faring, hide_forest, can_sap, very_hardy
formation 1, 1, 2, 2, 5, square
stat_health 2, 0
stat_pri 25, 4, no, 0, 0, melee, simple, piercing, spear, 25 ,1
stat_pri_attr spear, spear_bonus_8
stat_sec 0, 0, no, 0, 0, no, no, no, none, 25 ,1
stat_sec_attr no
stat_pri_armour 3, 9, 5, leather
stat_sec_armour 0, 0, flesh
stat_heat 2
stat_ground 2, 0, 0, 0
stat_mental 14, disciplined, highly_trained
stat_charge_dist 30
stat_fire_delay 0
stat_food 60, 300
stat_cost 2, 1190, 460, 120, 180, 1190
ownership greek_cities

In order for the officer to work you will also need to add the following entry in descr_model_battle as a new entry.

type spartan_officer
skeleton fs_dagger
skeleton_horse fs_hc_swordsman
skeleton_elephant fs_forest_elephant_rider
skeleton_chariot fs_chariot_sword
skeleton_camel fs_hc_swordsman
indiv_range 40
texture greek_cities, data/models_unit/textures/300leonidas.tga
model_flexi_m data/models_unit/ss2.cas, 15
model_flexi_m data/models_unit/ss2.cas, 30
model_flexi_m data/models_unit/ss2.cas, 40
model_flexi_m data/models_unit/ss2.cas, max
model_tri 400, 0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5

Make sure to place the models in the models_unit folder and the textures in the models_unit/textures folder, if this folder doesn't exist then create it.

Thanks dude. Finally got it to work. Only thing is it slows down the game if I have more than one on the field at a time. Other than that though its good. Oh and the spears go through the shield but besides that its awesome.

I had the same problem with trying to put the model in... i did everything it says in the tutorial and when i load a battle it crashes to the desktop. I'm seriously getting pissed because I've done this over 5 times.
