Indeed it does. One cannot possibly imagine what the two family names Lannister and Stark are based on But if you like the series, you should read the books as well. I've read them all (the ones released, anyway), and they are certainly some of the best books I've ever read
I had run out of interesting movies and I said, 'why not watch this?' In the end it sucked me in though. It was very entertaining and I didn't even know it was derived from a book. From what I've understood so far it shares many similarities with the actual English War of the Roses.
