Yes, mostly discoveries, but the spanish had some colonies such Cuba and Hispaniola. The portuguese had by 1492: Ceuta, Tangiers, Arguin(Africa), Cape verde(africa),Elmina(Africa), Fernando Poo and Annobón(africa), Gold coast(africa),azores, madeira, etc more here
so mostly it is exploration?
I told everything to you , read it! The start of the european european colonization of the Americas is dated to 1492 with Christopher Columbus. In 1497, sailing from the north on behalf of England, John Cabot landed on the North American coast, and a year later, Columbus's third voyage reached the South American coast. Also starting in 1492 will give time to meso-american empires to expand and survive, 1520 is too close of spanish domination of meso-american empires. And you can see on Atlas, the map from 1492 and 1520 looks about the same, but theres alot of important events before 1520, such discovery of brasil in 1500, treaty of tordesillas 1494 and much much more.
I know all that about Columbus, but why should we start then?
